Healthy Kid's Day 2011 at the Downtown Y







Mark your calendar for Downtown YMCA Healthy Kids Day!

Saturday April 16, 2011 9am - 12pm


Enjoy FREE games, arts and crafts, healthy treats, educational resources and demonstrations. Learn simple ways to live healthier and make healthy living fun!We will be waiving the joining fees for anyone interested in becoming a member of our Health Club as well for the week of April 10th - 16th!




As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y hosts Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when one in three children in the United States are overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever.


The YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga recommends five simple activities families can do to play together:


1. Schedule a Game Night: Play games with the kids that incorporate physical activity, such as Charades.

2. Dance, Dance: Turn on your favorite party music and dance! Make this activity more fun with a dance contest.

3. Go Riding: Find a new bike path or park for a fun afternoon outdoors; grab your helmets and go rollerblading or bike riding.

4. Channel Your Inner Youth: Remember playing hopscotch, jump rope, Simon Says or freeze tag as a kid? Teach your favorite childhood game to your kid(s) and play them together.

5. Play Outside: Visit your neighborhood park or camp out in your backyard for some outdoor fun. Get everyone moving with fun sports like soccer, basketball or baseball.

Zumba Aerobic Classes in Downtown Chattanooga




Join the Party!

The Downtown Chattanooga Y offers Zumba classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm. Come see and experience the world's most popular dance-fitness program. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance-fitness party that fuses music, dance, and aerobic workout like no other. Here at the Downtown Y, the Zumba class is so popular we've moved to the gym!

Our certified instructors are here to help if you are new to Zumba. Zumba classes (and all Group Exercise classes) are included with a Y membership.

SilverSneakers in Downtown Chattanooga


Looking for more information about SilverSneakers in Chattanooga? The Downtown Chattanooga YMCA is the place to be! The SilverSneakers program offers free memberships to health clubs and fitness centers, and the Chattanooga YMCA is a participating partner.


Here's how it works:

SilverSneakers Fitness Program

If your health plan includes the SilverSneakers Fitness Program as part of your benefits package, you can participate at any SilverSneakers fitness center at no additional cost to your monthly health plan premium.


The Silversneakers Fitness Program includes:

Fitness Center Membership Benefits

Get more active with people just like you. Enjoy a full basic membership including conditioning classes and the use of strength tools, pools, steam/sauna rooms and more. Each fitness center is selected for its warm, friendly and safe environment.

Fitness Classes Including SilverSneakers

SilverSneakers classes are perfect for Medicare-eligible members and will benefit you regardless of your fitness level. You'll increase your strength and flexibility and start to feel good all over! Chairs are available if you would like a little extra support. SilverSneakers classes are safe, fun, and taught by certified instructors.

Senior Advisor Assistance

A helpful, caring, specially trained Senior Advisor is waiting to welcome you to the fitness center and acquaint you with the SilverSneakers Program. The Senior Advisor will help you choose the activities that are appropriate for you.

Strong Kids Campaign 2011

Beginning in March, The Chattanooga Metropolitan YMCA kicks off its annual Strong Kids Campaign. The Y is for Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Strong Kids Campaign allows the YMCA to give back to the Chattanooga community in so many ways: scholarships, Sunshine Camp, Senior Wellness, Y-Cap, and more. Have you considered volunteering? Yoga and Pilates in Downtown Chattanooga




For those who love Yoga and Pilates or have never experienced it, the Downtown Chattanooga YMCA is the place for you. Our YMCA Yoga and Pilates instructors are experts in their field. They are skilled at evaluating clients and designing effective workouts to meet fitness goals in a safe and reliable manner.

Our Yoga classes improve your strength, flexibility and posture. Proper technique and breathing are taught involving the various forms of yoga. We will teach you focus on your mind, body and spirit.

Taking our
Pilates classes will help lengthens and strengthens your muscles, especially the abdomen and thighs. It relieves tension, improves posture, and helps protect against injuries. Elite athletes use it to improve performance. Fragile people use it to build strength and stability. Injured people use it for rehabilitation. Fit people use it to achieve that long, lean look and to flatten their abs.

One of our new year's resolutions is to keep our members (and anyone else) updated with all of the events going on at the Downtown Chattanooga YMCA.
